You need only glance briefly at the AW17 menswear shows for proof that trainers are now a fully-fledged fashion essential, but these sneaks aren’t bound for your gym bag. From sleek minimalist kicks to retro running trainers, meet the three key trainer trends to add to your collection this autumn.
No matter your style, there is room in every man’s wardrobe for a minimalist sneaker. The clue is in the name – think simple, pared-back styling – but these sneaks are anything but basic. Crafted from luxe leather that’s supple-but-sturdy, the sleek style will complement any look. Kurt Geiger London’s 'Donnie' design is our take on the trend, and it’s fast becoming a best-seller. While you can’t go wrong with all black or box-fresh white, there’s an on-trend pink hue for those of you feeling a little more adventurous. Wear them with jeans, joggers, chinos and even a suit for a modern take on work wear.
Retro-inspired sneaks are our Head of Men’s Design Shaun’s specialty. In fact, the 'Alverez' trainers, which come in grey, black and tan, were based on a 70’s vintage football sneaker he found in a flea market in LA. Style Alvarez with dark jeans and a t-shirt or sweater for off-duty, then switch to a smarter long-sleeved shirt for a laid-back evening look. A shearling collar leather bomber jacket is the perfect finishing touch.
While the minimal and retro styles fall more into the ‘fashion trainer’ category, there’s another trend in proper technical runners that don’t require any actual running. The 'Lamont' and 'Charlie' styles are the perfect options to nod to classic runners without the need for Lycra. Jeans are, as always, a no-brainer pairing, but turned up chinos or smarter tailored trousers will create a cool contrast. Lamont’s two-tone design is a great way to incorporate this season’s colour-block trend too.
